DPS Terminology

Because the online postage service industry uses many different words for the same concepts, it's worth defining how a few key terms are used in DPS documentation.

Shipper

A shipper is an ID assigned to each account. The shipper ID is used to associate all jobs and activities.

Job

When creating a shipping label or other DPS service, a job is created each time you submit a payload.

Topics

Topics are essential to link jobs with previously created jobs, and link return labels.
Any combination of characters can be used to create topics.

Sender

A sender is an object of the Shipper ID and is the person, company, and address listed in the “from” address fields.

Recipient

The recipient is the person/company that will receive the mailing or shipment.

Address

The recipient’s postal address.

Address Vderification

Address verification is used to verify the accuracy of the sender and recipient addresses.

Address Book

Address Book is the collection of recipient address(s).
A default address book is associated with each shipper.

Documents

Documents are the PDFs submitted when creating a job.

Real-time tracking of documents and packages.

Certificates

Certificates are electronically signed proofs of mailing and delivery.
The DPS API allows you to programmatically create Certificates of Mailing and Delivery based on job status.
